Four hours later, Nick
walked into Brian’s house and sat down. Brian, Leighanne, and AJ looked at him.
“I can’t believe her,” Nick said.
“I know,” AJ said. Nick’s cell phone rang.
“Hello, yes, what, I’ll be right there,” Nick said.
“Nick,” AJ said.
“Hayley was hit by a car as she was crossing the street to go to
a hotel, the driver was drunk, Hayley’s in critical condition, she and the baby might die,” Nick said. They went
to the hospital. Kevin and Kristin met them there. Kevin and Kristin sat down and talked quietly. They sat and waited. Dr.
Davis came out.
“Nick,” Dr. Davis said.
“Yeah,” Nick said.
“I will need to talk to you alone,” Dr. Davis said.
“You can tell us all, they will find out anyways,” Nick said.
Dr. Davis looked at everyone.
“Hayley is on life support, we had to do that to keep her and the
baby alive, she and the baby could both die, unless we perform a C-section and get the baby out,” Dr. Davis said.
“Will the baby survive?” Nick asked.
“She is only six months along so it’s possible that it might
not make it,” Dr. Davis said.
“Is there any other way?” Nick asked.
“I wish there was, it’s the only chance Hayley has,”
Dr. Davis said. Nick looked at Kevin. Kevin came up beside him.
“If that is the only chance Hayley has to live, Nick, it has to
be done,” Kevin said.
“But, the baby, it’s an innocent life,” Nick said.
“We won’t know what will happen until we do the procedure,”
Dr. Davis said.
“Do what you can, Dr. Davis,” Nick said. He nodded and went
back through the doors. Nick sat down. They waited there for word on Hayley.
