Hayley looked at her mother and looked at Nick and looked away and looked out the window of her room.
“What is she doing here?” Hayley asked.
“She is giving in, Hayley,” Nick said.
“It took me losing our baby to get her to do that, I
don’t want her anywhere near me,” Hayley said.
“Hayley, I have realized for awhile what I’ve been
doing, and I should have said something sooner, I know you love Nick and you are married to him and I know that you are happy
with him, I was excited at the thought of being a grandmother, and I don’t know why I did what I was doing, I wish I
could go back and change things, but I can’t,” Laura said.
“I don’t care, Mother, you caused me to lose my
baby, it is your fault, I don’t want you here, please leave,” Hayley said. Laura looked at Nick. He looked away.
Laura left. Nick stroked Hayley’s forehead. She looked at him.
“Nicky, hold me, please,” Hayley said. Nick got
in bed with her and held her close as she cried. Laura came in with Brian behind her.
“Hayley, please, I’m your mother,” Laura
said.
“Get out!” Hayley cried. Nick got up and stood
in front of Laura and crossed his arms.
“Please go, Laura,” Nick said.
“I thought you were on my side, Nick,” Laura said.
“I’m on my wife’s side, where I always will
be, I will not go against her for anything, I respect her and her wishes, if she wants you away from her, I will do whatever
it takes to keep you away from her,” Nick said. Two cops came in.
“Mr. Carter, you are under arrest for assault,”
one cop said. Nick looked at them.
“I didn’t assault anyone!” Nick said.
“You hit me, Nick,” Laura said.
“I did not, you are just making up crap to get me away
from Hayley so you can have her back, she is my wife, Laura, she can make her own choices, my mother taught me never to hit
a woman and I never have,” Nick said.
“He’s telling the truth,” Brian said.
“When did he hit you, Mom,” Hayley said.
“When they came up to the house, before we came down
here,” Laura said.
“Laura, you forgot that me, Howie, AJ, and Kevin were
with Nick and he didn’t touch you, guys, she can’t let go of her daughter, Hayley, who is married to Nick, she
can’t realize what her daughter wants, her daughter is 26 years old, she is a grownup making her own choices, but her
mother can’t let go, she has been doing stuff for weeks trying to get her daughter back,” Brian said.
“Mrs. Hardin, is this true?” the cop asked.
“No, he’ll say anything to get his friend off the
hook,” Laura said.
“Mom, stop this, please, if you care about me, you will
give it up,” Hayley said.
“I will drop the charges if you leave with me now,”
Laura said.
“Mom, stop this, I’m a grown woman who can make
my own choices, I’m not a little girl anymore,” Hayley said.
“Officers, me, Nick, Howie, AJ, and Kevin are the Backstreet Boys, and we would not do something to jeopardize
our careers, we are honest and responsible guys, we have fans of all ages and we do our best to set good examples of our fans,
assault of any kind is not one of them,” Brian said.
“Mom, please, stop this and drop the phony charges, you
know he didn’t hit you, stop lying, you need to grow up, Mom,” Hayley said. Laura looked at her daughter.
“Please, Laura, don’t break Hayley’s heart
more than it was,” Brian said.
“Okay, I’m sorry, he didn’t do anything to
me,” Laura said. The cops left. Nick glared at Laura.
“I’m sorry, okay,” Laura said.
“Just go, okay,” Nick said. Laura went out the
door and Nick sat down next to Hayley’s bed.
