Three months later, Hayley and Nick had grown closer and made their marriage
official. Hayley was in the bathroom. She came out and saw Nick sitting up in bed, reading a magazine. She got into bed. He
put the magazine away and pulled her close and kissed her softly. They removed each other’s clothes and he slowly made
love to her. He laid on top of her gently and leaned down and kissed her.
“I love you,” Nick said. Hayley looked up at him.
“What,” Hayley said. Nick looked at her.
“I love you, Hayley,” Nick said. She laid there looking at him. He got up and got dressed.
“You don’t love me,” Nick said.
“I didn’t say that, Nick, I’m just scared,” Hayley said.
“Scared, of what, me?” Nick asked.
“No, I’m just scared that if I say it back, something will happen and I’ll end up with a broken heart
again,” Hayley said.
“You really think that little of me, I’m your husband, Hayley, you can trust me, I would not hurt you for
anything,” Nick said.
“Nick, I have gotten hurt in the past, I have told you that, I have not completely gotten over it yet, I have
not trusted myself to give my heart away, I want to be sure that I can do that without getting hurt,” Hayley said.
“I can’t believe this,” Nick said. Hayley got dressed.
“Nick, you have to understand, I’m trying here, give it time, I will be able to love again, let me have
the time to learn again,” Hayley said.
“I need to go for a walk,” Nick said. He went out the door. Hayley sat on the bed. She laid on the bed
and felt tears run down her cheeks. She heard a noise and saw Brian at the doorway. He came in and sat down.
“Hey, what happened,” Brian said.
“Just a little disagreement, what brings you by,” Hayley said.
“I just got back from visiting Kevin, the divorce is final and he is now dating his childhood sweetheart, he’s
happy,” Brian said.
“Good,” Hayley said.
“Hayley, what is going on,” Brian said.
“Nick told me he loves me, I couldn’t say it back, I have to learn to love again, I’m just scared,
I don’t think he understood,” Hayley said crying.
“He’ll understand, once he thinks about what you said, he’ll understand,” Brian said.
“I don’t
want to lose him, Brian, I care for him so much, I know I have fallen for him, I just have to trust myself to love again,”
Hayley said. They looked up and saw Nick standing at the doorway.
