Nick sat there holding Hayley’s hand when she opened her eyes and saw
him.
“Hey,” Nick said.
“Who are you?” Hayley asked.
“What,” Nick said.
“Who are you, where am I?” Hayley asked.
“You are at a hospital in Tampa, I’m Nick, your husband,” Nick said.
“My husband?” Hayley asked.
“Yes,” Nick said.
“I can’t be married, I’m in high school,” Hayley said.
“I’ll get the doctor,” Nick said. He went out of the room and went to find Dr. Davis who was talking
to Greg and Laura.
“Dr. Davis, she’s awake, I think she’s got amnesia, she remembers being in high school,” Nick
said. Dr. Davis went to her room with Nick, Greg, and Laura behind her. He examined Hayley.
“Mom, Dad,” Hayley said. Greg and Laura hugged her. Nick hung back by the door.
“Hi honey,” Laura said.
“I’m married, Mom, is that true?” Hayley asked.
“Yes, honey, you are, you may not remember but you are, honey, you aren’t in high school, you are grown
up, you have amnesia, honey, that is why you don’t remember much,” Laura said. Hayley looked at Nick who was by
the door. She looked at her mother.
“I want to go home with you guys, you are the only two people I know,” Hayley said. Laura and Greg looked
at Nick, who nodded and went out the door. He leaned against the wall and slid down to the floor. Laura came out and saw him.
He looked up at her.
“It’s for the best, she knows you two but she doesn’t know me or my friends,” Nick said quietly.
Laura nodded and went back in. Nick got up and walked out to the waiting room where everyone else was and told them what was
going on. Nick left the hospital and went home to pack some of Hayley’s clothes. He went back to the hospital and went
to Hayley’s room and saw her asleep with her mother by her side. He quietly put the bag down and nodded to Laura and
went back out the door. He went back home and sat down on the couch and laid his head on the back of the couch and stared
at the ceiling. He knew it was for the best but he couldn’t help feeling empty inside.
